Stratten Energy, headquartered in Georgia, announced on January 10th a partnership with local power company Shipping Shoals EMC to demonstrate its vanadium flow battery (VRFB) technology and evaluate its application scenarios.
On the same day, CMBlu Energy announced that it would collaborate with utility and industrial clients to deploy medium to long-term energy storage projects using its organic SolidFlow VRFB products in the United States by 2025. CMBlu is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, and its liquid flow battery technology uses aqueous electrolyte solutions made from recycled organic materials.
These two companies are one of the few liquid flow battery companies in Europe and America today, attempting to expand production scale and reduce the dominant position of lithium-ion batteries in the current electrochemical storage market.
Stryten Energy was founded in 1888 and is a well-established manufacturing industry with a history of over 100 years. In recent years, it has established a presence in lead-acid, lithium batteries, and flow battery energy storage systems. The collaboration between Stryten and Shipping Shoals EMC will evaluate the application scenarios in which this technology will provide maximum benefits. Scott Childers, Vice President of Basic Power Division at Stratten Energy, said, "The collaboration between Stratten Energy and Shipping Shoals will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of how VRFB technology operates under real-world conditions. By testing battery storage systems for various usage needs, we can identify areas where we can maximize benefits for energy suppliers."
Stryten stated that its vanadium electrolyte is purchased domestically in the United States and is easy to recycle. Through technological improvements, it has increased power density, reduced battery downtime, and potential infinite cycle life. With thermal safety and scalability, their energy storage products can meet different energy storage needs.
CMBlu was founded in 2014 by a group of German manufacturing executives. The company plans to provide its first generation modular energy storage system for testing to some American energy clients this year. Founder and CEO Peter Geigle stated that the decision to expand into the United States was based on several factors and cited the Inflation Reduction Act as a key driving force for US market growth.
"Compared to Germany and other European countries, the United States is clearly in a leading position in the development and application of large-scale energy storage solutions. In the Los Angeles region alone, there are already more battery energy storage projects than in the entire Europe," he said. "We hope to support this market transformation, and once our products are recognized, we will be committed to establishing a manufacturing business in the United States. We already have strong R&D and manufacturing capabilities with over 160 employees in Germany."
In June 2022, the company reached a long-term research and demonstration project agreement with an Austrian utility company to test its technology. Recently, CellCube, a liquid flow battery competitor headquartered in Austria, also established an American subsidiary to commercialize its products in North America.
