Chinese Returnees Entrepreneurship Competition: The Neutral Energy Storage Non-fluorine Ion Exchange Membrane Project Stands Out

From June 16th to 19th, the 2024 (10th) China Overseas Returnees Entrepreneurship Competition, hosted by the Overseas Students Entrepreneurship Park Work Committee of the China Association for Science and Technology, and co-organized by the Jiangsu High-tech Entrepreneurship Service Center and the Suzhou High-tech Zone Management Committee, concluded successfully in Suzhou High-tech Zone. Since its launch in March, the competition has undergone a multi-level selection process including online screening, preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and finals, featuring roadshows, defenses, expert reviews, and more. The "High-Performance, Low-Cost Non-fluorine Ion Exchange Membrane for Hydrogen Energy and Flow Batteries" project by Zhonghe Energy Storage stood out for its advanced technology and development potential. As the only representative project from Hunan, it entered the national finals and was awarded the National Excellence Award.

Addressing the current market pain point of high initial installation costs for flow batteries, ZH Energy Storage, leveraging nearly 20 years of experience in the flow battery industry in the United States by its founder, Dr. Xie Wei, has jointly developed a high-performance, low-cost non-fluorine ion exchange membrane with Professor Liu Suqin's team from Central South University. This innovation ensures high performance (with battery test performance reaching the level of DuPont's Nafion membrane) while reducing the cost of the ion exchange membrane by more than 80%, thereby reducing the battery cost from the front end and consequently lowering the total system installation cost.


ZH Energy Storage's non-fluorine ion exchange membrane can be applied in fields such as fuel cells, hydrogen energy, flow batteries, and metal ion separation. It is currently in the continuous pilot production phase, has provided customers with 60-centimeter wide products for verification testing, and has received bulk orders.


PBI Flow Battery Membrane: Compared to the commonly used fluorine-containing proton exchange membranes, the PBI (Polybenzimidazole) flow battery membrane has the advantages of easy preparation of resin raw materials and low cost. The PBI flow battery membrane product from Hechuxincai has successfully resolved the contradiction between the antioxidant performance and proton conductivity of non-fluorine proton exchange membrane materials in the past, achieving the goal of simultaneous improvement in chemical stability and proton conductivity. Its battery test performance has reached the same level as fluorine-containing proton exchange membranes. This product can be used in various flow battery technology routes, including all-vanadium, iron-chromium, and sulfur-iron.

▶ Good ion selectivity, with high proton conductivity and vanadium resistance;
▶ Thin thickness, high strength, low swelling rate, good dimensional stability, and not easily punctured by electrodes;
▶ High temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and good chemical stability.

PBI Fuel Cell Membrane: The PBI fuel cell membrane from Hechuxincai is a non-reinforced polybenzimidazole membrane prepared by the casting method. The product has excellent high-temperature resistance and can maintain long-term stability at 300°C, suitable for the field of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
