【 Summary 】On September 5th local time, a container lithium battery energy storage system at the SDG&E battery storage facility in Escondido, California, USA, caught fire
According to US media reports, on September 5th local time, a container lithium battery energy storage system at the SDG&E battery storage facility in Escondido, California, caught fire. The Escondido Fire Department and SDG&E stated in a joint statement that the fire had been extinguished since 1am on Friday and all evacuation orders had been lifted.
It is reported that the Escondido energy storage project officially began operation on February 24, 2017. The installed capacity of the project is 30MW/120MWh, mainly to cooperate with natural gas power plants for peak shaving, creating a record for the world's largest battery energy storage project at that time.
The fire lasted for 13 hours, according to the previous SDG&E statement, this is already the best case scenario, and the worst case scenario may last for 48 hours. In a statement issued to NBC7, San Diego Gas&Electric Company (SDG&E) stated that "in the coming weeks, the Escondido Fire Department and San Diego Gas&Electric Company (SDG&E) will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The fire broke out quickly and spread rapidly to the neighborhood, causing a large-scale deployment of emergency personnel and dispatching hazardous material handling teams from the city and San Diego County to assess potential hazards. The Escondido police evacuated commercial enterprises east of the accident site, with about 500 businesses and 1500 customers evacuated, resulting in the closure of multiple schools and causing anxiety and concern among residents and business owners due to the fire and the uncertainty it brought.
The Escondido 30MW lithium battery energy storage project, which experienced a fire this time, is located in the urban area with high population density, making safety particularly important. The dense population and complex environment of cities make it possible for any energy storage system accident to have incalculable consequences, posing a huge threat to the safety of people's lives and property and the normal operation of the city. Exploring the best energy storage solution suitable for densely populated areas while ensuring safety is worthy of our high attention and deep reflection.
Regarding energy storage safety, compared to lithium batteries, flow battery technology is receiving increasing attention and importance due to its inherent safety and system flexibility. Flow batteries use aqueous electrolytes to eliminate the risks of combustion and explosion from the material, making them a representative of high safety, low-cost, and long-life energy storage solutions.
ZH Energy Storage is a globally leading manufacturer of key materials and energy storage equipment for liquid flow batteries. Since its establishment, the company has been deeply involved in the field of liquid flow, focusing on energy security and actively exploring and achieving the optimal solution for energy storage in high safety areas such as densely populated residential areas, oil and gas reserves, paper mills, chemical parks, highway gas stations, airports, etc., contributing to China's energy green transformation, low-carbon, and high-quality development.
