New energy storage is the key technology to support the construction of a new energy system and a new power system, while driving the further expansion of the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, promoting scientific and technological innovation, personnel training and investment and employment, and is one of the new driving forces for the development of new quality productivity.

At the National Energy Administration press conference on July 31, according to Bian Guangqi, deputy director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Science and Technology Equipment, the National Energy Administration attaches great importance to the development of new energy storage, continues to guide the healthy and orderly development of new energy storage, and promotes the effectiveness of new energy storage. There are mainly the following points:

First, the scale of new energy storage installed capacity has grown steadily, and the installed capacity has exceeded 44 million kilowatts


By the first half of 2024, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage projects in China has reached 44.44 million kW / 99.06 million KWH, an increase of more than 40% over the end of 2023.


According to the public information of the National Energy Administration "Transcript of the Press Conference of the National Energy Administration in the first Quarter of 2024", by the end of 2023, the cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage projects completed and put into operation in the country has reached 31.39 million kW / 66.87 million KWH, with an average energy storage time of 2.1 hours. The cumulative installed capacity of new energy storage projects has reached 35.3 million kW / 77.68 million KWH.

According to this calculation, it was 31.39GW at the end of 2023, 35.3GW in the first quarter of this year, and 44.44GW in the first half of this year. That is to say, in the first quarter of this year, China installed 3.91GW, and in the second quarter of this year, 9.14GW!

Bian Guangqi introduced that in the operation project, from the installed scale, the new energy storage power station gradually showed a centralized and large-scale trend, and the installed capacity of less than 10,000 kilowatts accounted for 6.7% of the total installed capacity, the installed capacity of 1-100,000 kilowatts accounted for 38.5%, and the installed capacity of more than 100,000 kilowatts accounted for 54.8%.

From the perspective of energy storage time, the average energy storage time of new energy storage projects in the country is 2.2 hours, and the installed capacity of projects with energy storage time less than 2 hours accounts for 12.9% of the total installed capacity, the installed capacity of projects with 2-4 hours accounts for 74.6%, and the installed capacity of projects with more than 4 hours accounts for 12.5%.

From the perspective of regional distribution, the northwest is rich in scenery resources and has become the fastest developing region of new energy storage in the country, and the northwest has put into operation 10.3 million kilowatts of new energy storage installed capacity, accounting for 29.2% of the country, 25.3% in North China, 17.5% in central China, 15.2% in southern China, 12.3% in East China and 0.5% in Northeast China.

Second, the exploration and application of grid type energy storage to promote the diversified development of technologies
From the perspective of technical routes, a number of compressed air energy storage, flow battery energy storage, sodium-ion battery energy storage projects have been put into production, and the exploration and application of grid energy storage has promoted the diversified development of technologies.

As of the first half of 2024, lithium-ion battery energy storage has been put into operation, accounting for 97.0%, compressed air energy storage accounts for 1.1%, lead-carbon (acid) battery energy storage accounts for 0.8%, flow battery energy storage accounts for 0.4%, and other technical routes account for 0.7%.

From the application scenario, the installed capacity of independent energy storage and shared energy storage accounted for 45.3%, the installed capacity of new energy distribution accounted for 42.8%, and other application scenarios accounted for 11.9%.

Third, the new type of energy storage scheduling and application has been enhanced, and the adjustment effect has gradually emerged
In April this year, the National Energy Administration issued the Notice on Promoting New Energy Storage grid-Connection and Scheduling Application (National Energy Development Science and Technology Regulation (2024) No. 26), regulating new energy storage grid-connection access and promoting efficient scheduling and utilization of new energy storage. Since the issuance of the document, the National Energy Administration has organized the State Grid, Southern Power Grid, and Inner Mongolia Power Company to improve the rules, refine the measures, and continue to implement the work.

Since the beginning of this year, the level of new energy storage scheduling and application has continued to improve, and the role of new energy storage regulation has been enhanced. According to the statistics of power grid enterprises, the equivalent utilization hours of new energy storage in the operation area of the State Grid Company in the first half of 2024 reached 390 hours, and the equivalent charge and discharge times were about 93 times, which increased by about 100% and 86% respectively compared with the first half of 2023.

In Shandong, Gansu and other regions where the market operation is more mature, the level of new energy storage invocation has been further improved. In the first half of 2024, the equivalent utilization hours of new energy storage in the operation area of China Southern Power Grid Company reached 560 hours, which is close to the level of the whole year of 2023.

The National Energy Administration found through research that with the increase in the scale of new energy storage installed capacity, the role of new energy storage in promoting the development and consumption of new energy and improving the safe and stable operation level of the power system has gradually increased, effectively serving energy security. For example, as of the end of June, Shandong Province has put into operation a new energy storage capacity of 5.21 million kilowatts, effectively promoting the province's new energy consumption; As of July 15, Jiangsu Province had completed and put into operation 5.4 million kilowatts of new energy storage installed capacity, providing an important guarantee for this year's kurtosis summer.

In the next step, the National Energy Administration will strengthen planning guidance, strengthen pilot demonstration, optimize scheduling and application, improve the standard system, improve the market mechanism, and continue to promote the high-quality development of the new energy storage industry.
