【 Summary 】Recently, there have been multiple incidents of spontaneous combustion in domestic lithium battery transport trucks and containers.
For a long time, with the widespread application of lithium batteries and their explosive growth in the field of energy storage, "thermal runaway" of lithium batteries has become an inescapable topic in the development of new energy, energy storage safety, and social fire management.
Recently, several incidents of spontaneous combustion in lithium battery transport trucks and containers in China have not only posed significant safety challenges to land and sea transportation but have also sounded an alarm for the entire logistics industry, bringing the safety issues of lithium batteries back into public view.
Shenzhen Yantian Port
On July 4th, a heavy container caught fire at the Shenzhen Yantian Port. The container was loaded with lithium-ion batteries, which are classified as dangerous goods with the UN number 3480 and IMDG code class 9. After the accident occurred, the fire and maritime departments of Yantian District responded quickly and took emergency measures in a timely manner.
Lithium batteries are classified as flammable and explosive items, acting both as combustible materials and ignition sources. In the event of collisions, compression, overcharging, or short circuits, they are highly prone to causing fires and explosions, leading to casualties. Additionally, lithium batteries are extremely sensitive to high temperatures. As summer arrives and the weather becomes hot, the interiors of vehicle cabins and cargo containers can be exposed to scorching sunlight during transportation, causing internal temperatures to exceed 50 or even 60 degrees Celsius. Excessive heat can lead to thermal runaway within the batteries, potentially triggering explosions or fires. This poses safety hazards for the production, transportation, and practical use of lithium batteries, and also threatens personal safety and property.
