On June 25th, local time, an explosion occurred at the newly built hydrogen refueling station in the Gerstorfen freight center in Germany, which led to a fire. Local police reported "a loud bang was heard when the fire started." Approximately 20 firefighters arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire, and it took four hours to bring the blaze under control. There were no casualties, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
It is understood that the hydrogen refueling station was built by Tyczka Hydrogen, a gas company in Geretsried near Munich, and took 9 months to complete. Tyczka Hydrogen is responsible for the operation of the hydrogen station and the supply of green hydrogen. The project was funded by the Free State with 2 million euros as part of its hydrogen strategy.
Tyczka Hydrogen held an inauguration ceremony for the hydrogen station on June 17th, and it was closed after only one week of operation due to the explosion accident.
In a previous press release, Tyczka Hydrogen stated: "The hydrogen refueling station is equipped with hydrogen dispensers with pressures of 350 and 700 bar, capable of refueling various types of vehicles, including cars, buses, special vehicles, and heavy trucks." "In the current expansion phase, it can provide about 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day."
Due to its physical and chemical properties such as flammability, explosiveness, leakage, and diffusibility, hydrogen determines that safety issues must be highly valued in the development process of the hydrogen energy industry chain. The popularization and large-scale application of green hydrogen still have a long way to go.
