On July 14th, the feasibility study report of the 465MW/2600MWh salt cavern compressed air long-term energy storage project in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, successfully passed expert review in Beijing, marking an important milestone achievement for the project and entering the engineering implementation phase. After its completion, the power station will become the largest compressed air energy storage power station in the world, with an annual power generation capacity of 850 million kilowatt hours.
The project will be implemented in two phases: the first phase will have a single unit of 115MW, and the second phase will have a single unit of 350MW. After its completion, the power station will become the largest compressed air energy storage power station in the world, with an annual power generation capacity of 850 million kilowatt hours. Relying on the internationally leading advanced compressed air energy storage technology of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the advanced underground salt cavern cavity making technology of Suyan Group, the project will build the world's largest compressed air energy storage system with the best performance, accelerate the development and industrialization process of compressed air energy storage technology, explore a new cooperation model for production, education, research and use, innovate a flexible and diversified business model, build a demonstration sample of green, low-carbon and circular development in China, seize a new strategic highland of compressed air energy storage, and release strong social and industrial value.
Salt cavern compressed air energy storage is an application of large-scale long-term energy storage and power generation technology, which is similar in principle to common pumped storage power stations. Pumped storage power stations use electricity to pump water to the upper reservoir during low electricity consumption periods at night; During peak electricity usage during the day, water is released to generate electricity. The salt cavern compressed air energy storage power station replaced the upper storage with a salt cavern and replaced water with air. When electricity consumption is low, use electricity to extract and compress air into underground salt caverns, and then release compressed air for power generation during peak electricity consumption.
