According to foreign media reports, with the support of the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA), a 100kW/1.5MWh zinc air battery energy storage system (BESS) will be installed in a 32 building residential development project in Queens, New York.

NYSERDA is a public utility company dedicated to promoting innovation in areas such as energy efficiency and renewable energy integration. In the clean energy demonstration proposal solicitation event hosted by NYSERDA, this long-term energy storage project won. NYSERDA provided approximately $500000 in funding for the project's cost of approximately $2 million.

The total cost of this demonstration project is approximately 2 million US dollars or 12.66 million RMB; The corresponding installed capacity of 100KW/1.5MWh has a cost of $1333/KWh or 8440 yuan/KWh.

The main purpose of this project is to verify the economy and reliability of zinc air battery technology developed and manufactured by the start-up company Zinc8, headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. The battery system can store and discharge for more than 15 hours and will be combined with the on-site construction of the Fresh Meadows Apartments cogeneration system.

Zinc8's zinc air battery stores energy in the form of zinc particles and combines with oxygen to provide electricity. When the system is charged, zinc particles regenerate and return oxygen to the surrounding air. The company's modular BESS system is designed specifically for a power output range of 20kW to 50MW and can store energy for 8 to 100 hours.

Zinc8 CEO Ron MacDonald stated that the Earth is rich in zinc and has a complete supply chain in North America. Meanwhile, he believes that zinc batteries are recyclable and have high fire safety, providing the lowest energy storage cost in long-term applications. And because the energy storage capacity depends on the size of the zinc storage tank, just like vanadium flow batteries, by increasing the size of the tank, the system can scale to higher capacity, so the cost of energy storage will continue to decrease with the increase of time.

Zinc8 has signed a deployment agreement with Digital Energy Corp., the developer of the CHP factory. William Cristafaro, CEO of Digital Energy Corp, described zinc air battery energy storage as "very promising for integration" into his company's existing and developing customer groups, including distributed energy (DER) and microgrids.

Another utility company in the New York State Department of Energy, the New York Electric Power Administration (NYPA), is also demonstrating the technology of Zinc8 and deploying a 100kW/1MWh system.

Due to its densely populated urban environment, New York City has established the world's strictest fire regulations, making the deployment of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems in buildings a challenge, which has driven the deployment of demonstration projects for Znc8 with NYSERDA and NYPA.

The New York government has stated that long-term energy storage is expected to play an important role in helping the state achieve 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and achieve net zero carbon emissions targets by 2050.
